Independence Day is the perfect time for us to celebrate our country as a family. Yes, we attend the neighborhood party, go to the parade, and see some fireworks.

I cherish those family moments because we make sure our kids know that all over country we are celebrating our country and those who have served our country.

We talk about why there is red, white, and blue all around. We sing the patriotic songs. We practice knowing when to place our hands over our hearts and discuss why we need to be still and quiet.

We shout, “THANK YOU!” and celebrate our active and retired military as they pass by us in the parade.

Through these small actions, our children are learning something that is being forgotten in our country – to show respect for our country – even (and especially when) you don’t agree with others.

It is our freedom that gives us the privilege to disagree and more importantly – to show love and kindness when we disagree.
